Instructional Media Lab Questions And Answers

Training

What editing software can I learn at IML?

We provide over-the-sholder-help for iMovie, the Mac entry level video editing software. It is easy and rewarding to work with and the more advanced programs really require a workshop with about 6 hours of study to get started. We offer workshops in Final Cut during the semester. Also 3 or more students can request a special workshop by contacting Angelo Miranda. Academic Computing also has workshops "Audio and Video on the Web" and "Using Multi Media Tools" which cover the basics of using media equipment. Workshop schedule is at Workshops

How do I get training on camera, lighting and microphone usage?

When you make an appointment with Angelo Miranda to borrow equipment he will train you on the use of the equipment.

Cameras

Can I get a camera and tripod and help on how to use them?

Yes. By calling x3359 and leaving a request with Angelo Miranda, you can start the process to obtain a camera and help with it. This pickup is just up the hall from IML. The Instructional Media Lab is intended as a location for Post Production Video work, so cameras are not handed out there.

What kind of camera can I get?

Almost all of our cameras are single chip (consumer quality) digital movie cameras using miniDV tape. We still have a few VHS cameras available, but fewer and fewer are in good repair with each passing semester. The VHS cameras are not being replaced. Still cameras can be borrowed from MediaServices

I have trouble with the audio in my shoots. How can I improve my audio?

Join the club. (Ask Angelo Miranda for help, but be aware that there is no easy fix to background noise etc. except shooting in a studio. See below.)

TC Studio Space

Can I use a TC studio space for shooting my video?

Yes, we have some studio space in 253 Macy. Please inquire with Angelo Miranda as above. We also have a small space for recording audio.

Servers

I need to stream a lot of video from a server. Where can I do that and how much space can I have?

The QuickTimeServer is the place for TC video. It has a search engine and 4.5 Terabytes (4.5 thousand gigabytes) of space. But all of it is not for you! See Quick Time Server Policies for details.

Instructional Media Lab Policies

I need to work late into the night. How can I get swipe or uncontroled access to the IML lab?

TC Students who have completed advanced training in our workshops or who have demonstated compentency can obtain after hours access. Because "after hours access" is only for advanced users, we call it "advanced user access." In practical terms "advanced" means advanced in use of FinalCut.

I have lost my "advanced user access" to IML. What happened?

Three types of violation of the rules lead to loss of access. 1. Opening the door without a consultant present when someon knocks on the door. (If someone is knocking, then they do not have advanced student access). 2. Letting someone else use their ID to swipe into the lab, bringing in someone else with their card or leaving the door open when in after hours. 3. Rewireing equipment or changing the settings on workstations so the equipment is unavailable to other after hours users.

Steaming Server HTML

I need to make streaming links to my video file. I have uploaded the file to http://quicktime.tc.columbia.edu/cgi-bin/vIML/login/l2.pl but how do I link the file so it works in all the browsers and doesn't violate the new microsoft linking rules?
